The Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia decides this year to highlight the word that has marked the last twelve months and does so as part of its #leparolevalgono campaign, aimed at promoting correct and conscious use of the language. In the year in which Giulia Cecchettin was killed by her boyfriend Filippo Turetta, 102 other women were murdered. Over the last ten years the average in Italy has been 150 per year. Even in the media the word has taken on growing relevance . WOMAN AS SUCH In the Treccani Vocabulary of the Italian language this is the definition of "femicide": "Direct or provoked killing, physical elimination of a woman as such, expression of a centuries-old chauvinistic and patriarchal culture which, having penetrated common sense also through language, has imprinted on the conception of woman the mark of a presumed, and always unfounded, inferiority and subordination compared to man".
The choice of "femicide" as the word of the year, underlines Treccani, "highlights DY Leads the urgency of drawing attention to the phenomenon of gender violence, to stimulate reflection and promote a constructive debate around a theme that is before all cultural: an operation designed not only to understand the world and society around us, but also to contribute to further empowering and raising awareness of readers on a topic that has inevitably positioned itself at the center of current affairs". GENDER DISCRIMINATION As the Observatory of the Italian language, explains Valeria Della Valle, scientific director, together with Giuseppe Patota, of the Treccani Vocabulary, "we are not concerned with the recurrence and frequency of use of the word 'feminicide' in quantitative terms, but with its relevance from the point of sociocultural point of view: how much is it present in common use, to what extent does it occur in the press and in non-fiction? Unfortunately, in 2023 its presence has become more relevant, to the point of configuring itself as a sort of alarm bell that signals, on a linguistic level, the intensity of gender discrimination".
OIL STAIN Della Valle adds: “The term, perfectly congruent with the mechanisms that regulate the formation of words in Italian, made its appearance in our language in 2001 (and was recorded in the Treccani Neologisms of 2008): since then it has spread like wildfire. of oil as much as the crime that is its referent”. The term began to have a certain diffusion especially starting from 2008, also thanks to Barbara Spinelli's book entitled "Feminicide". It is a non-indigenous word, explains Treccani: it is a calque of the English "feminicide", to be compared with the Spanish "feminicide", coined by the criminologist Diana Russel in one of her essays and taken up by the Mexican anthropologist Marcela Lagarde in a his 1993 writing to indicate the numerous murders of women on the borders between Mexico and the United States.
